Willie has over 40 years experience in the electric power industry, commencing in the late 1970’s with a 14 Year career with Eskom in South Africa, which is the main power utility in South Africa. Willie emigrated to Australia in 1994, and commenced work with the Queensland Electricity Commission (QEC), which then transformed into Power link QLD, where he worked until May 2010. Since mid-2010, Willie has been working in consultancy practices undertaking network modelling for both industrial and private generation Clients.Willie’s main areas of specialisation are Power System Modelling and Performance measurement, with significant experience in both testing of generating plant and subsequent analysis of the test signals. Willie has numerous years of experience using power system modelling tools, primarily PSS/E, and has developed many Client network models from scratch, and with his experienced eye has also been requested to modify many existing models depending on the network modifications beingundertaken by Clients.Willie has also had experience deriving R2 machine parameters from tests for a number of power stations; the most recent derivations was undertaken towards the end of 2009 for the upgraded Stanwell units and after that also for the Yarwun gas turbine. Willie was also responsible for the development of many of the software tools for signal processing that had been used in Power link QLD and a range of tools that had been used during analysis of the test signals.Whilst with Power link QLD, Willie performed testing and commissioning of many power station generators, including:Mount Stuart gas turbine generators, Townsville gas turbine generator, Oakey gas turbine generators, Callide C steam generators, Millmerran steam generators, Braemar 1 gas turbine generators, Darling Downs heat recovery steam turbine generator; commissioning testing was also performed on the gas turbine at the Yarwun aluminum refinery, but this was after he left Power link QLD. Willie has also performed testing at stations that had been operational, mainly after unit upgrades. This included testing at Barron Gorge, Tarong, Gladstone, Swanbank B and Stanwell.Other areas of expertise include: control system analysis; mathematical modelling; developing specialised software and software tools; simulation of system events, including under-frequency and over-frequency events; investigating quality of supply issues; examining and setting of pole-slip relay settings; and developing limit equations.
